Sawyer comes from an English occupational surname meaning "sawer of wood." Mark Twain gave it to the hero of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876); rare as an American given name before 1980, it rose over the following two decades and received another boost from a character in the television series Lost after its 2004 debut.
