Meaning and history
Sergius was a Roman patrician family name, probably of unknown Etruscan origin, though it has sometimes been linked to a Latin meaning “servant.” The name was borne by a 4th-century Roman officer martyred in Syria with his companion Bacchus; together they became patron saints of Christian desert nomads. It also belonged to a 14th-century Russian spiritual leader known as Sergey in Russian, four popes, and a Roman official mentioned briefly in the New Testament.
