Shirin is a Persian name meaning “sweet” and was borne by the Christian wife of the 7th-century Sasanian emperor Khosrow II. Her story appears in the 10th-century Persian epic the Shahnameh and in Khosrow and Shirin by the 12th-century poet Nizami Ganjavi.
