Sidney comes from an English surname and first became a given name in honor of executed politician Algernon Sidney (1622–1683); poet and statesman Philip Sidney (1554–1586) also bore the surname. Traditionally more masculine, it was used more often for American girls than boys from 1993 to 2019 after the rise of the feminine spelling Sydney.
