Meaning and history
Skylar is a variant of Skyler that was originally more common for boys in the 1980s, but became popular as a girls’ name after it was used on the American soap opera The Young and the Restless in 1989 and in the film Good Will Hunting in 1997. Its sharp rise in the United States in 2011 may be linked to the character Skyler White in Breaking Bad (2008–2013) or to singer Skylar Grey (born 1986), who adopted the name in 2010 after previously performing as Holly Brook.
