Meaning and history

This name comes from the Greek Σωκράτης (Sokrates), formed from σῶς (sos), meaning “whole, unwounded, safe,” and κράτος (kratos), meaning “power.” It was the name of the influential Greek philosopher Socrates, who wrote nothing himself, so nearly all that is known of his views comes from his pupil Plato, and who was sentenced to death for impiety.
