Sophia comes directly from Greek sophia, meaning “wisdom.” The name gained Christian significance through the personification of divine wisdom and saints named Sophia, and it has been borne by European royalty. The spelling j represents a y sound in several regional languages. Notable bearers include Serbian actor Sofija Juričan and Macedonian singer Sofija Knezević.
