Meaning and history
Solomon comes from the Hebrew name שְׁלֹמֹה (Shelomo), derived from שָׁלוֹם (shalom), meaning “peace.” In the Old Testament, Solomon was the king of Israel, son of David and Bathsheba, and was famed for his wisdom and wealth, though toward the end of his reign he angered God by turning to idolatry. He is traditionally credited with authorship of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon. The name has never been especially common in the Christian world and is generally regarded as typically Jewish, though it was also borne by an 11th-century Hungarian king.
