Stephania is a feminine form of Stephen used in several European languages and in Latinized contexts. Stephen derives from Greek stephanos, meaning “crown” or “wreath,” especially a victor’s wreath. Saint Stephen, described in Acts as the first Christian martyr, gave the name family lasting religious importance. Stephania is also a botanical genus, but the personal name has an independent classical history. Notable bearers include American sports journalist Stephania Bell and Greek-American water polo player Stephania Haralabidis.
