Suzan is a spelling variant of Susan used in English, Turkish, Dutch, and several other languages. Susan derives from Hebrew Shoshannah, meaning “lily,” and possibly originally referring more broadly to a flower. In the biblical Book of Daniel, Susanna is a virtuous woman falsely accused by elders, giving the name a long Jewish and Christian tradition. Notable bearers include American playwright Suzan-Lori Parks and Cheyenne and Hodulgee Muscogee activist Suzan Shown Harjo.
