Possibly meaning “he who inspires awe” in Amharic, Tafari was the name of Lij Tafari Makonnen (1892–1975), later known as Haile Selassie, the last emperor of Ethiopia. Rastafarians revere him as the earthly incarnation of God, with Ras Tafari meaning “king Tafari.”
