Meaning and history
The name means “date palm” in Hebrew. In the Old Testament, Tamar was the daughter-in-law of Judah; it was also the name of a daughter of King David who was raped by her half-brother Amnon, prompting her brother Absalom to murder him. The name was also borne by a 12th-century ruling queen of Georgia who presided over the kingdom at the height of its power.
