Meaning and history

Tamsen is an English feminine form related to Tamsin, traditionally a Cornish contraction of Thomasina. Thomasina is the feminine of Thomas, from Aramaic te’oma, meaning “twin.” Tamsen has also been used independently in North America. Its best-known historical bearer was Tamsen Donner, a member of the ill-fated Donner Party who travelled west toward California in 1846. The name is unrelated to the biblical Samson despite a superficial similarity.
