Meaning and history
Tancred is an English and French form of the Germanic name Thankrad, composed of elements meaning “thought” and “counsel.” It was introduced to southern Italy by the Normans and borne by medieval rulers and crusaders, including Tancred, prince of Galilee, and Tancred, king of Sicily. The name later appeared in literature, including works by Tasso and Disraeli. Modern real-life bearers are rare, and its strongest associations remain medieval and literary.
