Tāne is a Māori masculine name meaning “man” or “male” and is closely associated with Tāne Mahuta, the atua of forests and birds in Māori tradition. In creation narratives, Tāne separates his parents Ranginui and Papatūānuku, bringing light into the world. New Zealand opera singer Tāne Mahuta and the mythological deity are notable bearers.
