Taras is the Ukrainian, Russian, and Belarusian form of the Greek name Ταράσιος (Tarasios), possibly meaning “from Taras.” Taras was an Italian city, now Taranto, founded by Greek colonists in the 8th century BC and named after Taras, a figure in Greek mythology and son of Poseidon. The name was borne by Saint Tarasios, an 8th-century bishop of Constantinople, and by the Ukrainian writer and artist Taras Shevchenko (1814–1861).
