Tarek is a common transliteration of the Arabic masculine name Ṭāriq. It literally means “one who knocks” or “night visitor” and is also an Arabic name for the morning star, which appears at night. The name has strong historical associations with Tariq ibn Ziyad, the commander linked to the Muslim conquest of Iberia in 711.
