Terence

Terence comes from the Roman family name Terentius, whose meaning is unknown. Notable bearers include the Roman playwright Publius Terentius Afer and the Roman scholar Marcus Terentius Varro, and several early saints also bore the name. In Ireland, it was used as an Anglicized form of Toirdhealbhach, but it did not appear as an English name until the late 19th century. It was only moderately popular in the 20th century, though it has been common as an African-American name, especially since the 1970s.
