Meaning and history
Theodoric comes from the Gothic name *Þiudareiks, meaning “ruler of the people,” formed from þiuda, “people,” and reiks, “ruler” or “king.” It was notably borne by Theodoric the Great, a 6th-century king of the Ostrogoths who became ruler of Italy, and by his time the Ostrogoths were partly Romanized and his name was usually recorded as Theodoricus. The name was also used by two earlier 5th-century Visigothic kings.
