Meaning and history

Theophanes means “manifestation of God” from Greek θεός (theos), “god,” and φανής (phanes), “appearing.” The name was borne by several saints, including an 8th-century chronicler from Constantinople and the 19th-century Russian Orthodox saint Theophanes the Recluse, known in Russian as Феофан (Feofan), as well as the 14th-century Byzantine icon painter active in Moscow.
