Thor comes from Old Norse Þórr, meaning "thunder," ultimately from Proto-Germanic *Þunraz. In Norse mythology, Odin's red-bearded and quick-tempered son rules storms, thunder, war and strength, wielding the hammer Mjölnir and wearing the strength-doubling belt Megingjörð. At Ragnarök he is foretold to kill the sea serpent Jörmungandr before dying from its venom.
