Meaning and history
Timo is used in Finnish, Estonian, German, Dutch, and several other European languages. It is commonly a short form of Timothy, from Greek Timotheos, meaning “honouring God,” combining timē, “honour,” and theos, “god.” In German it can also shorten Germanic names such as Dietmar, which have a different origin, so the intended derivation depends on context. Notable bearers include German racing driver Timo Glock and German footballer Timo Werner.
In 2025, 6 babies were recorded with the name Timo, ranking #10,695 among boys.
