Timur is a name of Turkic and Mongol origin, derived from Temür, meaning “iron,” and it was borne by several Mongol, Turkic, and Yuan rulers. The best-known bearer was Timur, also called Tamerlane, from Persian تیمور لنگ (Tīmūr e Lang), meaning “Timur the lame,” a 14th-century Turkic leader who conquered much of western Asia.
