Meaning and history
Tobias is the Greek form of Tobiah and the hero of the apocryphal Book of Tobit, in which Tobit's son, aided by the angel Raphael, drives away the demon tormenting Sarah and then marries her. The medieval popularity of this story led to occasional European use of the name, which became common in England after the Protestant Reformation.
