Meaning and history
Toma has several uses. In Romanian, Croatian, Serbian, and other languages it is a form of Thomas, from Aramaic te’oma, meaning “twin.” In Japanese, Tōma or Toma may be written with many different kanji, so its meaning depends on the characters. These traditions are unrelated. Notable European bearers include Belgian judoka Toma Nikiforov and Romanian actor Toma Caragiu. Cultural context and original script determine the correct interpretation.
In 2025, 26 babies were recorded with the name Toma, ranking #4,050 among boys.
