Tora has distinct Scandinavian and Japanese uses. In Scandinavia it is a feminine form of Thor or a short form of names containing Þórr, the name of the Norse thunder god. In Japanese, Tora can be written 虎, meaning “tiger,” or with other characters, so its meaning depends on the script. The traditions are unrelated. A notable bearer is Norwegian politician and academic Tora Aasland; prominent exact-spelling Japanese bearers are comparatively uncommon.
