Troy originally came from a surname for someone from Troyes, France, but is now more often associated with the ancient city besieged in Homer's Iliad. Greek Troia was traditionally linked to founder Tros but is more likely Luwian or Hittite. Actor Troy Donahue (1936–2001), whose stage name referenced the ancient city, popularized the name in the 1960s.
