Trudie is an English and Dutch diminutive of Gertrude, and sometimes of other names containing the Germanic element trud. Gertrude combines Germanic elements meaning “strength” and “spear,” giving the traditional sense “spear of strength.” The name was borne by Saint Gertrude of Nivelles, a seventh-century Frankish abbess, and by several later religious figures. Trudie is often used independently in modern English. Notable bearers include English actor and producer Trudie Styler and English actor Trudie Goodwin.
