Tryphena is a biblical Greek feminine name derived from tryphe, meaning “delicacy,” “luxury,” or “softness.” In Paul’s Letter to the Romans, Tryphena and Tryphosa are Christian women praised for their work in the Lord. The name was later adopted in English Puritan and nonconformist communities through direct biblical naming. Notable historical bearers include Tryphena Sparks, associated with poet Thomas Hardy. Modern use is rare.
