Meaning and history
Tutankhamon is a variant transcription of Tutankhamun, the throne-era name of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh originally called Tutankhaten. In Egyptian it means approximately “living image of Amun,” reflecting the restoration of the god Amun’s cult after the Amarna period. Tutankhamun ruled in the late Eighteenth Dynasty and died young. He became internationally famous after Howard Carter discovered his largely intact tomb in 1922. Because it is chiefly a royal historical name, modern personal bearers are exceptionally rare.
