Tyra comes from the Old Norse name Þýri, a variant of the Norse names Þórví or Þórveig. In the English-speaking world, especially among African Americans, its use may partly reflect the Swedish name, though it is also probably understood as a feminine form of Tyrone or Tyree. A well-known bearer is the American model and actress Tyra Banks (1973–).
