Uliana is an East Slavic and Romanian form of Juliana. Juliana is the feminine of Julian, from the Roman family name Julius, whose original etymology is uncertain despite later associations with youth and the god Jupiter. Several Christian saints named Juliana helped spread the name across Europe. Notable bearers include Russian ballerina Uliana Lopatkina and Latvian-Soviet basketball player Uļjana Semjonova, whose name is often rendered Uliana or Uljana in other languages.
