Meaning and history
Uma means “flax” in Sanskrit and is another name of the Hindu goddess Parvati. Hindu texts also derive it from the Sanskrit exclamation उ मा (u mā), meaning “O do not (practice austerities)!,” which Parvati’s mother is said to have addressed to her.
