Umar is an Arabic name meaning “flourishing” or “living long,” derived from the root عمر (ʿumr), meaning “life.” It was borne by Umar, a companion and strong supporter of the Prophet Muhammad who became the second caliph of the Muslims and is regarded as one of the great founders of the Muslim state, as well as by the 12th-century Persian poet Umar Khayyam.
