Meaning and history
Urban comes from the Roman cognomen Urbanus, meaning “city dweller” in Latin and derived from urbs, “city.” The name appears briefly in one of Paul’s epistles in the New Testament and was later borne by eight popes between the 3rd and 17th centuries.
