Meaning and history
Uriah comes from the Hebrew name אוּרִיָה (ʾUriya), meaning “Yahweh is my light,” from אוּר (ʾur), “light” or “flame,” and יָהּ (yah), a reference to the Hebrew God. In the Old Testament, Uriah is the Hittite warrior in King David’s army who was Bathsheba’s first husband; David desired Bathsheba and arranged for Uriah to be placed at the front of battle so he would be killed.
