Meaning and history
Urszula is the Polish form of Ursula. Ursula is a Latin diminutive of ursa, meaning “she-bear,” and is conventionally interpreted as “little female bear.” The legendary Saint Ursula, said to have been martyred with a company of virgins, made the name widespread in medieval Christianity despite uncertainty surrounding her story. Notable bearers include Polish jazz singer Urszula Dudziak and Polish tennis player Urszula Radwańska. The Polish rz represents a distinctive consonant sound.
