Meaning and history
Valdemar is the Scandinavian form of Waldemar and is also used as a translation of the Slavic cognate Vladimir. The name was borne by four kings of Denmark and one king of Sweden, and it entered Scandinavia through the 12th-century Danish king Valdemar I, who was named for his mother’s grandfather, Vladimir II, grand prince of Kievan Rus.
