Valentine comes from the Roman name Valentinus, derived from the Latin valens meaning "strong," "vigorous" or "healthy." It has been used in English since the Middle Ages and is closely associated with Saint Valentine, a third-century martyr whose feast day became linked with romantic love. Literary use includes a central character in Shakespeare's The Two Gentlemen of Verona, while a notable modern bearer was French writer and artist Valentine de Saint-Point.
