Meaning and history
Vanda has several origins. In Central and Eastern Europe it is a form of Wanda, a name of uncertain origin associated with the legendary Polish Princess Wanda. In botanical usage, Vanda is an orchid genus whose name was borrowed from Sanskrit vandā for a particular plant; that source is separate from the European personal name. Notable bearers include Italian yoga teacher Vanda Scaravelli and Brazilian-Salvadoran politician Vanda Pignato. Context determines which tradition applies.
