Meaning and history
Varinia is a feminine name derived from the Roman family name Varinius or Varinus, whose original meaning is uncertain. It became widely familiar through Varinia, the fictional wife of Spartacus in Howard Fast’s novel Spartacus and its 1960 film adaptation, where she was portrayed by Jean Simmons. Because the name is primarily known from that literary creation, its modern cultural significance is stronger than its sparse ancient record. Reliable real-life bearers are uncommon.
