Meaning and history
Vera means "faith" in Russian and is sometimes associated in Western Europe with the Latin word verus, meaning "true." Long used in Slavic countries, it became established in the English-speaking world during the late nineteenth century. Notable bearers include fashion designer Vera Wang and astronomer Vera Rubin, whose work provided major evidence for dark matter.
