Verena is possibly related to Latin verus, meaning “true,” and may also be a Coptic form of the Ptolemaic name Berenice. Saint Verena was a 3rd-century nurse born in Egypt who traveled to Switzerland with the Theban Legion and settled near Zurich after the legion was massacred.
