Meaning and history
Viola means "violet" in Latin and names the heroine of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night (1602). After surviving a shipwreck, she disguises herself as Cesario and carries Duke Orsino's marriage proposal to Olivia, while falling in love with the duke herself.
