Virgil comes from the Roman family name Vergilius, whose meaning is unknown. It was borne by the 1st-century BC Roman poet Publius Vergilius Maro, known as Virgil and the author of the Aeneid, and because of him it has been used as a given name in the English-speaking world since the 19th century.
