Meaning and history
Probably means “all-pervasive” in Sanskrit, from विष् (viṣ), meaning “to pervade, to spread through.” Vishnu is the Hindu god of preservation and protection, usually depicted as blue-skinned and four-armed, and his wife is Lakshmi. Although he appears in the Rigveda, he becomes much more prominent in later texts. Great heroes such as Krishna, Rama, and Narasimha are regarded as his avatars, and Vaishnavism, the largest denomination of Hinduism, worships Vishnu and his avatars as the supreme god.
In 2025, 17 babies were recorded with the name Vishnu, ranking #5,399 among boys.
