Vitaly is a Russian and Ukrainian form of the Late Latin name Vitalis, derived from vita, meaning “life,” and interpreted as “vital” or “full of life.” Several early Christian saints named Vitalis helped spread the name through Orthodox and Catholic traditions. Transliteration variants include Vitali and Vitaliy. Notable bearers include Soviet physicist and Nobel laureate Vitaly Ginzburg and Belarusian gymnast Vitaly Scherbo, one of the most successful male gymnasts in Olympic history.
