Meaning and history
This name comes from the Old Slavic *Voldiměrŭ, formed from volděti meaning “to rule” and měrŭ meaning “great, famous,” though the second element has also been linked to mirŭ meaning “peace, world.” It was borne by a 9th-century Bulgarian ruler and by Vladimir the Great, the 11th-century grand prince of Kyiv, who is venerated as a saint for Christianizing his realm. Notable later bearers include Vladimir Lenin (1870-1924), Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977), and Vladimir Putin (1952-).
