Waldo is an English form of Germanic names containing wald, meaning “rule” or “power,” and is related to Walter and Oswald. It was popularized in the United States by poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson, for whom Waldo was a middle name. American writer Waldo Frank is another notable bearer.
