Meaning and history
Possibly derived from a Germanic name meaning “a Wend,” referring to the Slavic people who once inhabited eastern Germany, Wanda is also the name in Polish legend of King Krak’s daughter, the legendary founder of Krakow. The name entered the English-speaking world through Ouida, who used it for the heroine of her novel Wanda (1883).
